Principle of Operation

How do 5v relay modules work in electronics?

The module uses a 5V relay controlled through an active-low input. When the input signal is LOW, the relay is activated and its contacts switch from their default state. When the input is HIGH, the relay returns to its default state. The COM terminal connects to NC when the relay is not energized. When the relay is activated, COM disconnects from NC and connects to NO. This allows the module to switch a connected device on or off according to the control signal.

Pinout

How do 5v relay modules work in electronics?

  • VCC: Connects to the module's 5V supply.
  • GND: Ground connection for the control circuit.
  • IN: Active-low relay control input. A LOW signal activates the relay.
  • COM: Common relay contact.
  • NO: Normally Open contact. Connects to COM when the relay is activated.
  • NC: Normally Closed contact. Connects to COM when the relay is not activated.

Wiring

To connect the relay module to an Arduino:

How to Interface High-Voltage Relay Module 5V One Channel with Arduino ElectroVigyan

  • Connect VCC to the Arduino 5V pin.
  • Connect GND to the Arduino GND pin.
  • Connect IN to a digital output pin, such as pin 2.
  • Connect the load to the relay's COM and NO or NC terminals, depending on the required switching behavior.

When using NO, the load is disconnected by default and switches on when the relay is activated. When using NC, the load is connected by default and disconnects when the relay is activated. Safety: The relay's contact rating does not make the module safe for every high-voltage application. Use suitable insulation, wiring, enclosures, and protective measures. Disconnect power before wiring the load.

Library

No library is required. The relay can be controlled using standard digital output functions available in Arduino IDE.

Simple Code

This example switches the relay on and off every second and displays its status in the Serial Monitor.

const int relayPin = 2;

void setup() {
  pinMode(relayPin, OUTPUT);
  digitalWrite(relayPin, HIGH); // Relay OFF
  Serial.begin(9600);
}

void loop() {
  digitalWrite(relayPin, LOW); // Relay ON
  Serial.println("Relay Status: ON");
  delay(1000);

  digitalWrite(relayPin, HIGH); // Relay OFF
  Serial.println("Relay Status: OFF");
  delay(1000);
}
