Transistor NPN 2N3904

The 2N3904 is a popular NPN transistor. When the base pin is held at ground, the collector and emitter are reverse-biased (open). When a signal is applied to the base pin, it becomes forward-biased (closed), allowing current to flow.

This transistor has a gain (hFE) of up to 300, which determines its amplification capability. It can handle a maximum collector current of 200mA, so it is unsuitable for loads exceeding this current. The base current (IB) should be limited to 5mA to properly bias the transistor.

When fully biased (saturation region), the transistor allows up to 200mA to flow from collector to emitter. Typical voltage ratings are 40V for collector-emitter (VCE) and 60V for collector-base (VCB). When the base current is removed (cut-off region), the transistor turns off, with a base-emitter voltage around 600mV.

Features

  • Bipolar NPN Transistor
  • DC Current Gain (hFE): up to 300
  • Continuous Collector Current (IC): 200mA
  • Base-Emitter Voltage (VBE): 6V
  • Collector-Emitter Voltage (VCE): 40V
  • Collector-Base Voltage (VCB): 60V
  • Package: TO-92

2N3904 as a Switch

Used as a switch, the 2N3904 operates between saturation (fully ON) and cut-off (fully OFF) regions. The transistor behaves like an open switch during forward bias and a closed switch during reverse bias, controlled by the base current.

Applications

  • Relay and LED driver modules
  • Audio and signal amplifiers
  • Control of voltage loads up to 40V
  • Commonly used in TVs and household appliances
