Principle of Operation

The SIM800A communicates with a microcontroller through its TTL serial interface using AT commands. The controller can send commands to make calls, send or receive SMS messages, and establish GPRS data connections.

Arduino SIM800L GSM

A compatible SIM card and an available 2G GSM network are required. The NET LED indicates network status, while the RING LED can indicate incoming call activity.

Wiring

Connect the board to a compatible microcontroller or USB-to-TTL adapter using the serial interface.

  • TXD: Connect to the RX pin of the controller or adapter.

  • RXD: Connect to the TX pin of the controller or adapter.

  • GND: Connect the grounds together.

  • Power: Use a supply that meets the requirements of this specific board.

  • SIM card: Insert a compatible Micro SIM card with an active service plan.

  • Antenna: Connect the supplied antenna before using the cellular function.

For PC debugging, a CP2102 USB-to-TTL adapter can be used for serial communication. Confirm the required logic levels and power connections before connecting the adapter. The adapter's USB power output may not provide sufficient current for the GSM module's transmission bursts.
