The SparkFun Qwiic dToF TMF8821 Imager is a compact and high-performance direct time-of-flight (dToF) sensor, engineered for accurate distance and object detection. It integrates advanced technologies including a Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Laser (VCSEL) and Single Photon Avalanche Diode (SPAD) for precise range measurement up to 5000mm. The sensor employs a time-to-digital converter (TDC) and histogram-based data processing to improve measurement accuracy.

It supports multizone output configurations (3x3, 4x4, 3x6), making it suitable for tracking multiple objects. The integrated multi-lens array (MLA) enables a dynamic field of view (FoV) adjustment, expanding its sensing capability. The TMF8821 also features ambient light suppression using an on-chip optical filter, ensuring reliable operation from total darkness to bright sunlight.

The sensor is accessible via the Qwiic interface for solderless integration or through traditional pins for breadboarding, and it is ideal for applications such as camera autofocus, presence detection, robotic object avoidance, and industrial safety systems.
