Logic Gate CD4511 4-Bit Binary Input BCD CC 7-Segment Display Driver

The CD4511 BCD to 7-Segment Display Driver is a CMOS integrated circuit designed to simplify the connection between digital logic circuits, microcontrollers, and common cathode 7-segment LED displays. It combines a 4-bit BCD latch, decoder, and display driver in a single chip, allowing binary-coded decimal inputs to be directly converted into readable numeric digits on a 7-segment display. The IC accepts a 4-bit BCD input (0000 to 1001) and controls the seven display segments automatically without requiring multiple logic gates or software decoding. It includes latch enable, lamp test, and blanking control inputs, making it suitable for counters, clocks, measurement devices, educational electronics, and embedded projects.

  • Compatible with Arduino, microcontrollers, counters, and digital logic circuits.

Principle of Operation

The CD4511 receives a 4-bit Binary Coded Decimal (BCD) signal through its input pins A, B, C, and D. The internal decoder converts this binary value into seven separate output signals that control the segments of a common cathode 7-segment display.

When a valid BCD value from 0000 to 1001 is applied, the IC activates the required segments to show the corresponding decimal digit from 0 to 9. The internal latch can store the input value, while the Lamp Test and Blanking pins provide additional control over display operation.
